Fundraiser set in child custody case PDF Print E-mail

Written by Scott Dunn

Fundraising card games and a public awareness event are planned for Tuesday at the Owen Sound legion to support a mother's efforts to win custody and visits with her son, who was sent back to Australia by court order last October.

"The bottom line is, Jessica (Fleguel) is going to be able to do as much she can do based on how much money she raises," said Esther Gieringer, Fleguel's mother.

Gieringer, who is organizing the event, said the money would go toward financing a legal fight, which she said is scheduled to begin June 11 in Australia. Money will also be needed for transportation costs, she said.

Admission for the fundraiser is $10 per person, which includes a light lunch, musical entertainment and the opportunity to play cards and bid in silent auctions for donated prizes.

People can play euchre, bridge and pepper or any other game they choose to bring, from 1 p. m. until 5 p. m., then 6:30 p. m. to 10:30 p. m. Cindy Crosby will entertain in the afternoon and the Gypsy Jive Band will provide the evening entertainment.

Fleguel said she left Australia in November 2007 with her two children, one of whom was fathered by an Australian national, to escape an abusive relationship.

The boy's father, Craig Cannock, has had temporary custody of the boy since he was returned to him last October. The father was deported from Canada.

Superior Court Justice Robert Thompson ordered the child be returned to live with his father and paternal grandparents in Australia, citing international law that dictates that is the appropriate place to hold the child custody hearing.

Although he was born in Canada, the child is deemed under the Hague Convention on Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction to be a "habitual resident" of Australia since he lived there 16 1/2 months and just five weeks in Canada before he was brought back here last November.

Gieringer said her daughter is prohibitted from communicating with media by Australian court order. Gieringer will speak at the event. Joachim Ostertag of the Men's Program, a counselling service for men involved with domestic abuse, will speak as well.

Tickets for the fundraiser are available at the Downtown Bookstore, by calling Jessica Fleguel at 376-1753, or Sam at 376-4698.

Account 79-91088 has been opened at the CIBC to accept donations.
