Written by Amy Dalrymple

BISMARCK – The North Dakota Senate today unanimously approved a bill that calls for a major rewrite of the child custody and visitation laws.

Senate Bill 2042 proposes to remove much of the animosity and repeat court appearances from child custody cases. It came from an interim committee that studied the issue after the 2007 Legislature.

Sen. Tim Mathern, D-Fargo, said the bill calls for changes in terminology that will be more “parent friendly.”

“We thought this was a way to make some movement in a positive direction in this often tough process determining custody and visitations,” Mathern said.
