Children And Divorce: Parental Alienation Syndrome – What Fathers Can Do

Madhubanti (name changed) harbored bitter feelings against her estranged husband and continuously came up with ways to punish him. The method which seemed to work best for her was alienating her son from her husband. She misused her power as a lawyer to file a criminal case against her NRI husband, prohibiting him from entering India, where she lived with her son after the separation.

Super dads lend the magic touch to parenting PDF Print E-mail

In many new-age families, no task is too great for fathers who believe they should be involved in raising their children. Five hands-on dads Speak Up on the joy of parenting.

Try to become a part of their routine and share activity time
Fathers are definitely equal partners in the parenting process. In most Western or developed nations, this equal responsibility is a given fact and some countries also have legislations in this regard. In India, the change is taking place slowly.

I very much wanted to be a part of the parenting process and was lucky that my work environment allowed me the freedom and time to do this. In our society, it is often the women who cluster together around the baby, like the mother, grandmothers, sundry aunts, sisters, nurses, ayahs and so
on. The men tend to keep a stern distance from all the cooing and gurgling!

Parliamentary panel recommends safeguards to amended divorce law PDF Print E-mail
Written by LEGAL CORRESPONDENT - THE HINDU
Monday, 07 March 2011 08:52

The Department related Committee on the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Law and Justice, — headed by Congress Member of Parliament Jayanthi Natarajan, — while being in favour of the introduction of ‘irretrievable breakdown of marriage' as a new grounds for grant of divorce in the Hindu Marriage Act and Special Marriage Act, has suggested that some vital social issues should be addressed before this was put in place.

Though the Committee, which went into the Marriage Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2010, was in agreement with the rationale behind the Bill, it was of the view that since some of its clauses had vital implications, it must be reviewed.

It stated so in its report on the Bill submitted to Parliament. The Bill, after its introduction in the Rajya Sabha in August 2010, had been sent to the Committee for feedback.

CRISP tips accepted by RS panel PDF Print E-mail

The Rajya Sabha Parliamentary Committee, which submitted its 45th report on public grievances, law and justice, has accepted some of the major suggestions made by Bangalore-based NGO ‘Children's Rights Initiative for Shared Parenting (CRISP) for the proposed Marriage Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2010.

In the Bill to be tabled before the Lok Sabha, CRISP, which has made several significant suggestions related to Children’s rights and compensation was in a celebratory mood.
Kumar V Jahgirdhar, president, CRISP, who was invited to present his recomendations to the committee, said his prime recommendation that if the husband wants to save a marriage, he should be give an opportunity to save it for the sake of children.

“Children are not represented by anybody. This is necessary in their interest,” Jahgirdhar said.

CRISP has also suggested that the Government must ensure that the child’s custody be given to parents jointly at the time of divorce so that natural parents have equal access in the interest of children.

Maintenance

Another CRISP suggestion accepted by the committee is concerned with adopted children.

“Even the adopted children should be considered for maintenance if their adopted parents get separated,” he said.

Reacting to the inclusion of their suggestions in the bill to be tabled in the Lok Sabha, Jahgirdhar said that CRISP is excited about this law being amended in the interest of children. Crisp was invited with other NGOs by the committee in August 2010.
